The Simmon's Cliff is located approximately 20 miles East of Valentine, Nebraska, facing the North bank of the National Scenic Niobrara River. The WI4-5, 180 foot face is formed by ground water moving laterally across the top of the Ogallala formation and exiting planet Earth near the top of this cliff system. Aided by the northly shade and typical winter temperatures in this area, a chandelier of ice accumulates ranging from verglas to 2 feet thick . These pictures were shot on 2/9/02 after several weeks of atypically variable temperatures that have steadily degraded the quantity of ice. Sporting a very large amount of vertical ice, the center section reaches out a little further in a 2% overhang that creates a drool of icycles, slots, holes, and other hookable features.
This is an undiscovered climbing area on the privately-owned Niobrara River Ranch. The owner of this land is supportive of climbing activity and has made world-class log-home lodging available to climbers visiting this area at very affordable prices. Private log homes capable of acommodating 10-15 people are available for daily rental just 1/2 mile from this site. The landowner requests that each climber download this release form, print, sign and fax it back to: 402-475-1867. Access to the site is incredibly easy with parking 150 feet from the top of the climb. The bottom of this cliff system is not accessible from the bottom, expect perhaps by canoe, kayak or raft. |
