The Compact Black was created specifically for alpine and waterfall climbers that require a short, light tool for pounding pitons, pickets or (say it ain’t so) old style ice screws. The tool is useful for guides that typically carry a long classical axe and need to hammer pickets. Climbers using modern leashless tools – often shaped like deer antlers and utterly useless for pounding pitons – in the mountains will find a place for the Compact Black in their quiver of tools. As an emergency tool it offers a big margin of safety relative to its weight. The head is hot-forged from a single piece of ChroMoly steel.
