These ropes were retired by (wise) lead-climbers because they had sustained
5-6 lead-falls. The ropes had not been taken to failure, however, for
climbing purposes, manufacturers recommend retirement after approximately
this number of impacts. In Yucca Dune country, these ropes are of interest
to ranchers and rodeo cowboys who fashion halters, lead-lines, jerk-lines,
etc. For such uses, they have worked quite well, but are much more affordable
than new rope. Because of their prior use they handle nicely.
These ropes have completed their life-time mission of catching lead climbers
hell-bent on pancaking into the valley floor.
As such, further use of these
ropes for climbing, mountaineering, rapelling and other high angle pursuits
is not recommended.
